Leatherman Charge+ Black Oxide Multi-Tool

Leatherman Charge+ Black Oxide Multi-Tool

Though not classed as the flagship model of multi-tools that Leatherman produces, it currently seems that the Leatherman Charge+ is being offered in more options than most of the others in the range. It can be purchased in stainless steel, as well as a few other options, including the Charge+ with G10 handle plates in red or orange, or the one featured here, the Black Oxide version. A type of tool that appeals to many due to the protective finish this treatment offers.

It’s worth mentioning at this point that all ‘+’ designated models in the company’s range are now fitted with replaceable wire and hard wire cutters.

Size matters

Measuring 4” in the closed position, and 6 ¼” when opened (to access the pliers), the Leatherman Charge+ Black Oxide weighs 8.3oz. When closed, you have access to the four outboard tools, including a 2.9”, clip-point, fine-edge knife that’s made from 154CM steel. Plus, there’s a wood/metal file (diamond coated), a saw, and a 420HC serrated knife with a cutting hook. Both knife blades have elongated thumbholes for one-handed opening, while the multi-purpose file and wood saw have lugs. All of them lock out very securely using strong lock liner mechanisms.

Many prefer this type of multi-tool design because you have quick access to the blades and the most often-used field tools.
With the tool opened, you are given access to the needlenose pliers, replaceable wire cutters, replaceable hard-wire cutters, and wire strippers.

On the inside

When open it, you also have access to the spring-action scissors, can opener, bottle opener, large bit driver, small bit driver, and a medium flat head screwdriver. All deploy by using thumb nicks or small lugs. To unlock any of these tools when opened, you simply press in the grooved portion of the lock system (located opposite and at the end of the handle).

The customisable bit driver is included in the build, and the tool comes supplied with quite a comprehensive ‘bit kit’ that’s held in an ABS holder. Included inside is a selection of screwdriver bits (Phillips and flat), plus a decent array of Hex and Torx bits. There are even some square bits.

Conclusions

The Leatherman Charge+ Black Oxide is a very tough, well-featured, and accessorised Multi-Tool that’ll cope with virtually any field duties and tasks required of it. Plus, the black oxide finish will give extra protection from the elements and gives the tool quite an attractive look. It also comes supplied with a detachable, black oxide stainless-steel pocket clip, a quick-release lanyard ring, and a 4-pocket black nylon MOLLE sheath.
