Leatherman has brought us many top-quality multi-tools and they’ve now upgraded many of their models. Some now include replaceable wire and hard-wire cutters, so they can perform to their highest capability. However, on certain models, and by this I specifically refer to the Charge+, you now have the option to purchase the model with G10 handle plates in either red or orange. As many know, this is a material often used for knife handles and will be of great interest due to the properties it offers.
The Leatherman Charge+ weighs 8.3oz and measures 4” in the closed position and 6 ¼” when open. In the closed position, you have access to four outside accessible tools. These include a 2.9” S30V clippoint, fine edge knife, a diamond-coated wood/metal file, a wood saw and a 420HC serrated knife with a cutting hook. Both knife blades have elongated thumbholes for one-handed opening, while the file and saw have lugs. All of them lock out very securely using strong lock liner mechanisms.
Many prefer this type of user-friendly multitool design as you have easy access to the blades and regular use field tools, plus it allows for a relatively uncluttered and slimline outer casing.
Opening the Charge+ gives access to the needlenose pliers, regular pliers, premium replaceable wire & hardwire cutters, wire strippers and electrical crimper.
The inner sanctum When open you can deploy the spring-action scissors, can opener, bottle opener, large & small bit driver and a medium flathead screwdriver. All of them are easily deployed using thumb nicks or small lugs. To unlock any of these tools once opened, simply press in the grooved portion of the lock system (located opposite and at the pivot end of the handle) which then allows the tool to be returned back into the chassis.
G10 is a high-pressure fibreglass laminate, which is a type of lightweight composite material. It’s highly durable and very strong, meaning it can withstand heavy use in both wet and dry conditions. Another key feature of these handles is that they are textured to offer a high level of grip. In fact, they have been given an almost ripple-like effect that is as cosmetically stylish as it is secure in the hold.
If you’re looking for a fully-featured multi-tool, then without doubt the Leatherman Charge+ G10 will effortlessly cope with virtually any field duties and tasks, plus the G10 handles will afford a secure hold, whatever the weather. It also comes supplied with a comprehensive Bit Kit, ABS holder, detachable stainless-steel pocket clip, quick-release lanyard ring and 4-pocket black nylon sheath.
